English Brown Oak (EBO) Morris Chair
View EBO Morris Chair

Features

This Morris chair has the same features as my regular chair, but is constructed of English Brown Oak. A natural fungus in English Brown oak lends the lovely colour many factories try to emulate with stains or ammonia fuming. The inlaid stars on the backs of this pair of chairs were made by the client (see Mission Pedestal Bookcase ) of ebony, the little dipper on one, the big dipper on the other. I traced the star layout from H.A. Rey's "The Stars" for accuracy. (Same guy who wrote Curious George, but I digress).

I'm very proud of my chair for several reasons. I have adjusted the size to be a comfortable fit as older chairs were often too deep to get out of. My side assembly drops one inch front to back, accenting the slope of the arms.

I use webbing under down cushions for a cloudlike sit; and as well as fabric, offer a deluxe Scottish leather in a variety of clear dyed colours in a natural, comfy looking finish. The leather slows the air from leaving the down, offering a several minute settling period when you sit. Yum. Has the tilting back and real through tenons of the original chair.

Even my ottoman has webbing and a down cushion. This is a big ottoman that you can put a tray on. I used to think ottomans were a bit much until I test drove a few of my clients' models. Putting your feet up and laying back into a Morris chair is a rare treat.

You can chose any fabric from large fabric companies such as Robert Allen, or purchase any fabric and send it to me. Rich Scottish leather also available.

Made from one honkin' slab of cherry in 1981, as a "throne" for Tara, aged 4. I guess she could have her own kids by now!

Back joined to seat with angled hand cut dovetails. I made this in a little shop out on pilings over the Fraser river, a place of windows and silence, lapping water; shared with a master carver, down a little dirt road from my first humongous industrial lumberyard.

One of many pieces in the house of a client not too far from Blue Mountain.

One piece of air dried walnut ("scraps" from the custom walnut "tree" dining table). Bark left on, and chip carved because sometimes I just get tired of smooth as a texture. Do we have to sand everything to 400 grit?
